Cloud Security

Cloud security is a cybersecurity discipline designed to protect cloud computing environments. This includes ensuring the privacy and security of data across network infrastructure, apps, and platforms. Most cloud storage providers typically provide external cloud security. IT companies can offer different types of cloud management services, however, it should be customers’ decision to decide which services to use to protect their data.

Cloud security uses a mix of modern technologies, protocols, and best practices to secure cloud computing systems, apps that run in cloud services, and data stored in the Cloud. Protecting cloud services starts with realizing what needs to be secured and what system aspects must be managed. However, cloud security can still be affected by human errors and a possible lack of practices, which leads to customers’ data being unprotected.

Depending on the cloud service model, both cloud storage providers and customers who use them – be they large companies, smaller businesses, or individuals – may have different responsibilities:

  • Software-as-a-service (SaaS)— Dropbox, Zoom, Microsoft 365, Google Workspace. With this model, providers are responsible for securing applications and the supporting infrastructure. Users only have to worry about managing their data and security permissions.
  • Platform-as-a-service (PaaS)— Red Hat OpenShift, Google Kubernetes Engine. Customers are responsible for securing their data and managing applications, but the provider secures the operation of the underlying infrastructure and overall operating systems.
  • Infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS)—Microsoft Azure, AWS EC2, GCE. The provider is responsible for securing physical data centers and other hardware that power the infrastructure. Users must secure their data, operating systems, and software stacks that run their applications.

Whether customers use public cloud management tools or private cloud management tools, they are responsible for securing their data and giving access to it to third parties. Data protection is vital for cloud infrastructure management, as it provides gaining and successful application of the benefits of cloud services.

No matter which cloud services you are using or want to be a customer, you will have to think about what cloud network management tools to use. Besides, you need to realize how you want your data to be protected and who can access it.
